We Are Your Open Space Committee
~ PAST ~ In 1988 at Town Meeting the citizens of Nahant voted to establish the Nahant Open Space and Land Acquisition Committee.
The Open Space Committee sponsored the rehabilitation of the Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. Memorial Park at East Point.
The old missile silos had been topped with landfill resulting in an unsightly public hazard. With help from many wonderful people, the rehabilitation process was largely completed in 1997 and the stunning natural beauty of East Point was recaptured.

and rehabilitation)
The committee developed a management plan and remains involved with
the park.
The committee wrote the first Open Space Plan for the town of Nahant
in 1989. The Plan included an inventory of Open Space in Nahant
and a statement of goals.
Many Nahanters know the committee through participation in the beach
cleanups and our bird walks, which have been a great way to get
together and enjoy our open space.
~ PRESENT ~ In 2001 the committee
completed an updated Open Space Plan, which was necessary to apply
for grants for Open Space projects. A copy of the new Plan will
soon be posted on this web page, written copies are available at
the library. It contains maps and descriptions of Nahant's open
space, a survey of plants by John Benson, a list of Nahant's birds
by Linda Pivacek, and responses from Nahant residents to a survey
concerning Nahant's open space and recreational needs and opportunities.

FUTURE ~ With the completion of Nahant's Open Space Plan
and submission to the State, the town can now apply for grants to
fund the town's open space projects. Our goals include:
- Walking trail
from Little Nahant through the lowland meadows to Bailey's Hill
- Brochure
of open space and recreational sites
- Restoration
of dune grass
- Inform residents
about methods to protect open space
- Land acquisition
- Improved
access to Massachusetts Audubon Thicket
We
welcome your participation in protecting our natural resources.
