Nahant Open Space Management and Land Acquisition Committee

We would first like to thank the Board of Selectmen, the Town Manager, the Department of Public Works, the SWIM organization, and the many wonderful Nahanters who have helped make our goals a reality.

~ PAST ~
In 1988 at Town Meeting the citizens of Nahant voted to establish the Nahant Open Space Management and Land Acquisition Committee. The Committee wrote the first Open Space Plan for the Town of Nahant in 1989. The Plan included an inventory of Open Space in Nahant and a statement of goals. The Committee's accomplishments since then have included the following:

• Open Space Management Plan 2000
A new, enlarged and completely revised Plan was written by the Committee, with input from Town officials and citizens, following State guidelines.
• Lodge Park at East Point
With the help of many Nahanters, the stunning natural beauty of East Point was recaptured from an unsightly landfill.
• Heritage Trail
The new walking trail connecting Little Nahant to Bailey's Hill was planned and initiated.
• Organic Lawn Care
We co-sponsored this timely Workshop on a "green" alternative to the traditional approach to lawn management.
• Conservation Restriction
Our Workshop on this important tool for preserving land resulted in the first state-registered conservation restriction in Nahant.

~ PRESENT ~
In 2008 the committee completed an updated Open Space Plan. A copy is posted on the Town Web site, <www.Nahant.org>, and copies are available at the library. It contains maps and descriptions of Nahant's open spaces, a survey of plants by John Benson, a list of Nahant's birds by Linda Pivacek, and results of a survey of Nahant residents concerning open space and recreational needs. In addition, we have been involved in the following projects:

• Ongoing work on the Heritage Trail connecting Little Nahant to Bailey’s Hill
• Signage at Short Beach for the protection of our shorebirds
• Dune grass planting at Short Beach

~ FUTURE ~
With the completion of Nahant's upcoming Open Space Plan 2008-2013 and its acceptance by the State, the Town can apply for grants to fund the Town's open space projects. Our goals include:

• a Brochure of open space and recreational sites
• a Workshop informing residents about methods to protect open space
• a Heritage Tree Program to inventory and protect our trees

Many Nahanters know the Committee through our birding and nature walks—
a great way to get together and enjoy our open space!
