Welcome to the Town Clerk's Office

The Town Clerk acts as the town's chief election official, recorder, officer, registrar of vital statistics, public records officer and licensing officer.

The Clerk works closely with the Board of Registrars to oversee polling places and the general conduct of all elections. The Clerk also maintains records of adopted municipal code, by-laws, oaths of office, resignations and appointments.

The Town Clerk issues' state licenses and permits such as marriage and dog licenses etc.

The Clerk's office responds to the inquires from the public and servers as a central information point for the Town.

It is the mission of the Town Clerk to be a primary provider of information and quality services to the community and to work cooperatively and in coordination with the varied departments and groups while performing a myriad of tasks to achieve established goals and comply with state and local statutes.

Forms and Licenses

Marriage License (Updated September 2009)
If you wish to obtain a marriage license you must be (18) years old and the couple must appear at the Town Clerk's office together, in person, Exceptions can be made in cases where one of the parties is active in the military or incarcerated. There is a mandatory three-day waiting period for a Marriage License from the date of application to the date the license is issued. While weekends and holidays are included in the three days, the day the application is made is not..The Intent to Marry Form is provided below.

The cost of filing for a license is $5. The license is valid for sixty days, and may be used for a ceremony conducted in any city or town in Massachusetts. The Clergy or Justice of the Peace performing the ceremony must sign the license and return it to the issuing city or town.

Business Certificate (D.B.A.)
If you are conducting business in Town under a name other than your own or the corporation's, you must obtain a "doing business as" D.B.A. certificate from the Town Clerk. The D.B.A. certificate is maintained in a public virtual and allows consumers to identify and locate the owner of the business.

There is no filing fee in Nahant for a D.B.A. certificate. The certificate may be renewed in person or by mail. The certificate must be renewed every four years. In addition, a letter of clearance must be obtained from the Building Inspector prior to filing a D.B.A. with the Town Clerk. Both the D.B.A. Request and D.B.A. Change Forms are provided below.

Dog License
Every year, all dog owners must obtain a license for their dog by January 31st. You may get a license at the Town Clerk's Office at the Town Hall. To obtain a license, you must present a current rabies certificate. The fees for a dog license are outlined in the form below. To obtain a license by mail, send a copy of your dogs rabies certificate and a check for the appropriate amount made out to the Town of Nahant to the Town Clerk's Office. A Dog Licence Application is provided below.

Nahant List of Residents

2012 Street Book

The 2012 List of Residents book is now available at Town Hall in the Clerk's office. Cost is $5. This edition contains both Residents by Street Address and a complete list of Residents in alphabetical order.

Nahant Census Information

The 2013 Annual Street List (Census) Form should be arriving in the mail to all Nahant residences in the next few days. It is important to fill these forms out and return them within 10 days of receiving them.

Please list all members of your household, include your pets in the spaces provided, dogs must be licensed if you did not receive a dog license application in with your Street Listing please download one on the Nahant Web under the clerks page. Or you can pick one up in the Clerk's office. The Street List forms can be dropped off in the box provided in the Clerk's office or mailed to: Office of the Clerk, 334 Nahant Road, Nahant, MA 01908.

Please understand that this information provided
is important to the Town and to you.
The information you provide allows the Clerk's Office the ability to keep the Voter List current and accurate, and is needed for school population projections and full funding from the state and federal government.
For you it can mean the proof of residency for school enrollment, beach stickers.

If a Family Member is currently serving in the Military or away at college, unless that individual has established residency elsewhere, DO NOT REMOVE THEM FROM YOUR RESIDENCE CONTINUE TO LIST THEM AS RESIDENTS IN THE HOME.
Should a member of your family no longer reside at your address and/or they are a registered voter they must put in writing a request to be removed with their signature.

US Senate Special Election 2013

SPECIAL STATE ELECTION DAY IS June 25th, 2013
POLLS OPEN AT 7 AM NAHANT TOWN HALL.

Primary elections will be held on April 30th, 2013

Last day to Register voters for the State Primary is April 10, 2013 at 8 PM. The last day to register to participate in the June 25th Special Electionis June 5, 2013 at 8 PM.

Absentee Ballots are now available in the Clerks Office or online from THE SECRETARY OF THE COMMONWEALTHS WEBSITE.

Voting Information and Elections Schedule:
Voting takes place at the Nahant Town Hall according to the following schedule:

Municipal Last Saturday in April of Each Year
State and Congressional 1st Tuesday After the 1st Monday in November Every Two Years
Presidential 1st Tuesday After the 1st Monday in November Every Four Years

The Town Clerk administers nomination and election processes, registers voters, and conducts the annual municipal census. Voter registration in Nahant has never been easier than it is today. You may visit the Election Office in Nahant Town Hall and complete a voter registration form in person. Or, you may obtain a mail-in voter registration form from the Town Hall lobby.
