Welcome SWIM's Website!
Since 1984, Nahant SWIM, Inc. (Safer Waters in Massachusetts) has worked to protect the waters of the North Shore from pollution. Our goal is to protect both Boston Harbor and Massachusetts Bay.
SWIM has worked by participating in the planning and implementation process, by contributing scientific and technical expertise, through community organization, through citizen water quality monitoring, through working with other environmental groups, and through public education.

Latest News:
"Adopt A Beach" | Next Event | May 12th 11 AM (Low Tide 11:12 AM)

Adopt a Beach Findings | 4/15/2012
Tudor Beach: very clean; seawall and shoreline suffers from erosion. Trash: mostly rope (30) and strapping bands (30)
Crystal Beach: very clean. Trash: lots of rope; 7 bags, 7 caps/lids.
Canoe Beach: base measurements taken to monitor erosion of lawn: telephone pole to edge 4'6"; metal Town water valve cover 24' to edge straight through the air (hypotenuse); manhole cover to edge 15'. Erosion of NEMSC lawn. They might need to provide a slot through which people walk down to beach because human traffic as well as the sea are eroding the edge of the lawn. Smokers' litter along parking area. Vehicles regularly have engines on – should we think about an educational program about pollution by idling vehicles? This is big in other parts of the country. Trash: lots of rope, large variety of other trash.
Pond Beach: lots of brown & red algae, esp. Irish moss. Drain of fresh water is clear. Man observed removing pails of cobbles from beach – should we educate the public about current protection from this sort of harvesting? Trash: Crematory urn of "Poppy beloved pet of the Poirier Family – Hillside Crematory, Concord, NH 3/13/090"; moderate variety of trash, 23 pieces of rope; 13 lobster bait bags; 39 items related to human food packaging; 5 plastic bags.
Short Beach South: 6 trash bags filled! Tons of tiny pieces of plastic mixed in with seaweed. ; dogs loose on beach (we need to publicize the dog leash rules in Nahant); trash from store across the street; recycling bins would be helpful; need weekend pickup of trash as bins overflowing – maybe a Friday p.m. pickup would help. Many plastic bags, plastic bottles, caps & lids, food wrappers, pull tabs, bait containers, fishing lines, fishing nets, ropes. 2 couch cushions, 1 lawn chair, 1 recycling bin. Should we speak to the store about trash barrels in front of the store?
Bathing Beach: 5 outflows into sea, are these from MSC? Trash: cooler, 2 grill tops, shotgun shell, food wrappers, 50+ cigarettes, 2 tarps.
40 Steps Beach: considerable erosion along shore, esp. atop Jersey barriers. Could we have a trash barrel at bottom of steps? It was observed that there has been a dramatic decrease in sea creatures, esp. blue mussels, starfish, sea urchins, sea anemones, horse shoe crabs across the past 50 years. Serious load of invasive plants on hillside is crowding out native plants. Trash: beach had been cleaned a week earlier by one of our valiant Beachkeepers, so less trash than might be expected. 8 lobster traps, 48 pieces of rope, 6 lobster bait bags.
Two beaches will be monitored later this week, Short Beach Middle and Johnson Beach. Nobody picked up clipboard for Black Rock (Doggie) or Short Beach North.
SWIM Update:
Since 1984 SWIM has been an informal group of people dedicated to the health of the waters and beaches of Nahant under the inspiration and care of Polly Bradley. She retired from her leadership in 2010 and since then has gradually passed the leadership over to Vi Patek. We decided that it would be best if SWIM were given structure to provide durability and continuity into the future. After much work by Polly and Vi, we now have a set of By-Laws for SWIM. We also believe that SWIM should seek 501(c)(3) status.
