"The
90's (1890's) saw a vigorous "Village Improvement
Society". It was founded in 1897 and had as its object
the preservation of the natural beauties of the town and the
improvement in welfare of the people. This group was also partly
responsible for the purchase by the town of Marjoram Hill for
a public park."
