Check out the new Audio Tour At East Point!
Northeastern Marine Science Center has launched new smartphone/tablet-accessible audiotour of East Point that is now live. There are stakes in the ground around East Point for people to use to identify their location, and the App shows them a map also. The App is available for download at, and then folks can search for marine science center to find our tour. This project was developed in collaboration with the Nahant Historical Society, Nahant SWIM, and a couple of individuals.

Nahant Thicket Wildlife Sanctuary | Update 2018

Mass Audubon is preparing to conduct restoration work at Nahant Thicket Wildlife Sanctuary.

Restoration efforts will focus on three major goals:
1) managing vegetation to enhance wildlife habitat and the visual appeal of the outer boundaries of the thicket;

2) addressing hydrological constraints that may contribute to localized flooding; and

3) improving the visitor experience through improved parking, signage, and trails. For more information please read our restoration plan by clicking here.

Our Beaches

Canoe Beach Restoration Update | May 17, 2017

As of May 17th, the west end of Canoe Beach on East Point has been re-opened for resident use following a beach nourishment project conducted over the off-season.

In order to allow for resident use and enjoyment of Canoe Beach during the summer months, Northeastern University, along with the Nahant Conservation Commission and Selectmen, have decided to place the project on hold, while a determination is made on how the remainder of the work will be completed.

Nahant has many beaches that offer year round opportunities for young and old. Here's a list, some are named more than once...can you guess which ones?

DCR Beach Water Testing

Recreational use of water with microbial contamination can pose health risks to swimmers and others. As a result, beach water quality is regulated to protect public health. In Massachusetts, bathing beach water quality is regulated by M.G.L. C.111 and other regulations to establish minimum standards for bathing beaches.

Local boards of health (LBH) and the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) conduct the vast majority of beach water sampling in Massachusetts. Most of the samples are analyzed at private labs, while some are analyzed at municipal facilities.

In 2000, the U.S. Congress enacted the Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health (BEACH) Act to improve the quality of coastal recreational waters. The BEACH Act seeks to reduce the risk of disease to users of the Nation's marine recreational waters through the identification of high-risk beaches, identification and mitigation of sources of pollution, and notification/risk communication to the public. In late 2001, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) was awarded funding from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) that partially support Departmental efforts to develop a bathing beaches inventory and communicate results of beach monitoring to the general public.

FEMA Community Rating System | Information and Resources

The National Flood Insurance Program's (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages community floodplain management activities that exceed the minimum NFIP requirements.

As a result, flood insurance premium rates are discounted to reflect the reduced flood risk resulting from the community actions meeting the three goals of the CRS:

  1. Reduce flood damage to insurable property;
  2. Strengthen and support the insurance aspects of the NFIP, and
  3. Encourage a comprehensive approach to floodplain management.

Watch here as we continue to work to lower our flood insurance premiums through the FEMA CRS program.
